Screw Piles support London Underground Lighting Columns


FLI Structures, leaders in the design, manufacture of screw-pile foundations, are pleased to announce the installation of two screw pile bases to support 15m lighting columns, for London Underground.

FLI completed the work in the Railway siding, located near Parsons Green Underground Station, during day time working hours. Each screw piled base consisted of 4 x square shaft piles, that were installed using FLI’s hand held torque motors. All 8 piles were installed during this single shift, with each pile taking just 20 minutes each to install.  This also included hand carrying power packs & torque motors to and from site, setting out, CAT scanning and grouting the top of the piles.

FLI’s hand held solution was used to overcome the restricted site area and soft ground. No plant was required and working space requirements are low. The square shaft piles can be installed by hand and they can take high tension and compression forces. The grout at the head provides some lateral resistance. 

The benefits of using FLI Screw Piles on site include the speed at which they can be installed; this saves time and money on the project. Screw There are no excavations or spoil to cart away, saving money, particularly if there is contaminated ground. FLI Screw Piles are recyclable and can be removed and re-used easily. This will save time and money in the future. Finally, screw piles are a cost effective solution in soft ground, where traditional piling is more expensive and a concrete pad footing is technically unsuitable.
