Case Study
Signalling on North London Line
FLI Structures, leaders in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of screw pile foundations, are pleased to announce the successful completion of works on the re-signalling scheme with Carillion Infrastructure on the North London Line.
FLI carried out the ground investigations, designed solutions, fabricated steel and installed screw pile foundations for a range of structure types including straight signal posts, portal gantries and cantilever structures.
The timescale was very tight. FLI produced designs, obtained category III approval, fabricated the steel and installed the foundations - all within just 2 weeks. Bespoke designs were needed to overcome problems of restricted site access and steep embankments. FLI's design also took into account the proximity of buried services and to avoid re-routing of underground cables. This minimised the impact of the piling works. Installation was successfully carried out during weekend night possessions.
One of the benefits of Screw Piles is the speed at which they can be installed - this saves time and money on the project. There are no excavations or spoil to cart away, saving money, particularly if there is contaminated ground. FLI Screw Piles can be re-used. This will save time and money in the future. Finally, screw piles are a cost effective solution in soft ground, where traditional piling is more expensive and a concrete pad footing is technically unsuitable.
FLI are successfully designing helical pile solutions for a vast array of structures widely used by both Network Rail and Highways Agency, including portal gantries, cantilever gantries, signs, platforms, OLE masts, CCTV structures, etc. Tony Parker, Sales Manager at FLI comments "Our success is based on understanding and solving site problems efficiently, with safe solutions in mind for our installers. With a strong focus on innovation, we are able to supply foundation solutions to support for a wide range of structures in both Railway & Highways markets. We take experience from each site and use this knowledge to continue to lead the way in the screw pile foundations sector."
FLI's success on rail sites was recognised by Network Rail, who presented FLI with the innovation award at the Network Rail Partnership Awards.
