Screw Pile Foundations

Fast install on sloping, flat, congested, contaminated or challenging sites.
Perfect for soft ground, embankments and sites with flooding risk.

Steel Platform Sub Frame

Fast Install, aided by large tolerance interfaces with the piled foundations and pre-installed deck levelling and ancillary mountings.
The steel frame and steel mountings are surfaced with Dura d² 100 platform panels. These panels are light enough to be installed by hand, speeding up installation and are so good they carry the King's Award For Innovation.

Design, Fabrication and Installation

A fully resolved platform and foundation system, designed, manufactured and installed by FLI.

Advantages of Screw Pile Foundations for Station Platforms.

Ideal for soft or made-up ground (embankments), screw piles avoid embankment overload by piling into virgin strata below.

No excavation is necessary. As well as speeding up installation, this makes it a good solution for sites with contaminated ground or for bridging existing buried services.

Installation causes no vibration, so piling is possible close to historical structures, like retaining walls, buildings or bridges.

Screw pile foundations can accomodate high overturning forces, such as wind loading on fences and other ancillaries, or even integrating larger structures like gantries or footbridges into the platform.

The piles extend up to the underside of the platform, which avoids the need for any additional structure between the top of the foundation and the bottom of the platform deck beams.

Very fast installation

No preparatory groundworks, real time pile performance readings and immediately available for landing the platform structure.

No delays from ground issues

FLI's platform offers installation flexibility, it accommodates large pile tolerances and pile refusal.
It is also possible to work around bigger unforeseen issues (such as unmapped buried services) without suffering from delays, by using off-the-shelf offset and bridging components.

Installation of both foundation and platform in one deployment

Needing smaller, lighter plant and easier access than driven piling or pre-cast concrete solutions, installing a screw pile and steel frame platform is one deployment and  often one team.

Lifetime Benefits From Screw Pile Platforms

120 - Year Life

120  - year life for both foundation and superstructure with an enhanced galvanising and steel specification.

Low Maintenance

Specifying Tension Control Bolts throughout the structure, makes 100% visual inspection possible. Combined with a remote inspection tray and a digital Twin, this also enables lidar, laser or photogrammetry inspections. Fast, inexpensive and removing the need to lift platform panels.

Sustainability

Screw pile foundations deliver an 81% reduction in CO2 footprint over mass concrete foundations.
Also large section steel is fully recycled at end of life, with screw piles easily unscrewed from the ground.

Platform Upgrades

Full access to the platform framing enables modifications and upgrades, including installation of new services, ancillaries and platform extensions.

Rapid installation framing by FLI

Mitigate Flood Risk

Screw piles are a deep foundation with their load bearing surfaces well beyond the effects of floodwater. untroubled by scour or subsidence from saturated ground.

Island platform replacement

FLI supplied the foundation, platform frame and platform decking, carried out all the design work and were on-site through the installation.

The entire demolition and install was carried out in a single  possession over the Christmas holiday.

The new structure was then landed in pre-assembled sections, the platform panels falls adjusted on  FLI’s (patent pending) all steel fire-proof mountings  and the whole platform open to the public at the end of the holiday.

Ancillary Platform Structures

Mountings for Ancillaries

All ancillaries can be carried by the FLI platform with mounting plates on the sub-frame and pile caps.

Larger Structures

Structures like canopies, buildings or bridges can have their foundations with higher loadings, incorporated into the platform at low cost, through upgraded pile specifications.

Bridges & Walkways

FLI piling and platform solutions are suitable for bridges, walkways, gantries, and other line side station structures.

Station Platform FAQs

Quick answers to the most searched-for questions about Station Platform and Foundation Systems

What ground conditions are station platform screw pile foundations suitable for?

Screw piles perform in well in sands and clays, most chalk, engineered fill and other soft made-up ground. They do not like rock and dense gravels. They are very well suited to steep slopes and contaminated ground (as no excavation is necessary). Also sites where the ground could change along the length of a station platform, with subsidence affecting shallower solutions.

How do screw pile station platform foundations compare to precast railway platforms for speed of installation and possession time?

There is no concrete in screw pile foundations, so foundation and platform are installed together in a single mobilisation. The FLI system is designed with tolerances and adjustability that enable it to cope with issues arising during installation, so deadlines do not slide. The components are lighter than precast concrete which can reduce access problems and plant costs. More pre-assembly is possible, reducing install times.

How is ongoing maintenance handled?

The use of tension control bolts throughout the structure enables visual inspection, hugely reducing maintenance time. This also means that the platform deck panels do not need to be lifted for inspection. A camera or lidar can be run along the inspection track on the subframe instead.

What access is provided for inspection/cable management?

All cable management and other services run in ducting that is accessed from the platform deck.

How does the FLI system reduce risk to project costs and deadlines?

Install speed is combined with a reduction in risk to deadlines by FLI designing and producing both foundations and structures in-house, with all interfaces fully resolved and much of the solution being pre-assembled. Issues that arise during installation (for example un-mapped buried services) are solved with off-the-shelf components and solutions. Screw piles are installed to a prescribed torque, which is measured as they go in. They can be tested immediately where required. The superstructure is landed immediately, through interfaces with enough tolerance to avoid delays.

How does FLI’s screw pile platform system compare with other solutions on cost?

Price comparisons are highly dependent on individual project scope, ground investigation and site constraints. For most projects, FLI’s system achieves a competitive price through speed of installation.
