The Bob Shaw Bridge: Combining Engineering and Social Value in Rural Somerset

At first glance, the Bob Shaw Bridge in Loxton, Somerset looks understated.
That was entirely the point.


Designed, engineered, fabricated and installed by FLI Structures, the new pedestrian bridge provides safe access between the car park and the Frankie Howerd Community Hub & Café, a charity-run facility supporting elderly, isolated and vulnerable members of the local community.
For FLI Structures, the project was about more than delivering a steel footbridge. It was about using engineering to remove a real barrier for the people who rely on the hub every day, but while the structure itself may appear simple, the challenge behind it was anything but.

Engineering a Bridge for Its Surroundings

Located within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the project sat within a sensitive rural setting where visual impact mattered just as much as structural performance.
The challenge was to create a structure strong and durable enough for long-term public use, while ensuring it felt appropriate within the surrounding landscape.
From the outset, the goal was clear: create a permanent, safe crossing that felt like it belonged there.
Every aspect of the bridge was developed to complement the surrounding landscape rather than dominate it. Gentle curves soften the structure’s profile, while bespoke side panels incorporate subtle Frankie Howerd-inspired quips that connect the bridge directly to the heritage of the site.
The detailing process went through multiple design iterations, particularly around the decorative side panels. Even small details were carefully reviewed to ensure the bridge was safe and practical for public use. In one case, parts of the original pattern work were redesigned to remove openings where fingers could potentially become trapped.
The bridge was also engineered for rapid assembly, allowing the structure to be installed quickly with minimal disruption to the local community.
The result is infrastructure that serves the community while respecting the character of the village.

Engineering That Creates Social Value

Before the bridge was installed, visitors travelling between the car park and the café were required to cross a busy road.
For many older and disabled visitors, this created a genuine barrier to access.
The new bridge removes that obstacle completely, creating a safe and direct route into the hub and making the community space far easier to reach.
For many visitors, particularly elderly residents and those with limited mobility, the bridge changes how accessible the facility feels on a day-to-day basis.
That social impact became one of the most important parts of the project.
Sometimes the most effective engineering projects are the ones that solve simple everyday problems.

Designed for Efficient Installation

Alongside the visual and accessibility requirements, the project also demanded minimal disruption.
FLI Structures engineered the bridge as a self-contained solution capable of being delivered, assembled and lifted into place within a single working day.
The structure was fabricated off site and bolted together on location, helping reduce installation time while maintaining build quality and accuracy.
Reducing disruption was a key part of the engineering brief. The bridge needed to be practical to install while avoiding prolonged road closures or major disturbance within the village.
The structure arrived on site at approximately 10am and was fully installed by early afternoon.
By designing the bridge for rapid assembly, the team avoided prolonged disruption, extensive road closures and heavy site activity within the village.
The installation demonstrated how modern steel bridge solutions can combine long-term durability with highly efficient deployment.

Designed for Longevity and Practical Use

The bridge deck uses FLI’s patent-pending modular steel flooring panels, creating a durable non-slip surface suitable for pedestrians, mobility users and animals.
The modular system also helped speed up installation while maintaining long-term performance.

A Community-Led Project

The bridge forms part of the wider Frankie Howerd OBE Trust initiative, which has spent years developing the community hub and recently expanded into the new Dame June Whitfield Centre.
The official opening highlighted just how important the wider project has become for the local area, bringing together trustees, supporters, volunteers and community members.
The official opening ceremony welcomed Dame Joanna Lumley and Suzy Aitchison, who formally opened both the new centre and the bridge.
For FLI Structures, the project reflects a wider belief that engineering should create positive, lasting impact.
This was not simply about delivering a steel structure.
It was about creating safer access, supporting community connection and ensuring infrastructure enhanced rather than interrupted the environment around it.
