FLI designed and installed a foundation for a 50m T3A heavy-duty tower at an exposed site on Coombe Hill, in the borders between England and Scotland. Due to the tower's height, a large face width at the base and high leg forces, a full single grillage would have required excessive steel, increasing cost and weight. A simple micro pile foundation was designed.
Steel grillages were installed under each tower leg. The site's hard ground was unsuitable for screw piles, so micro piles were used, with threaded rods drilled deep into the bedrock and grouted to provide a secure connection.
